Easdale is one of our unique small islands that is so close, so easy to visit . On Foot
The island is entirely car free .. the wheelbarrows are very cute ! It is a day out for grounding to nature, the elements, the scenery.
You drive the 17 miles south of Oban, down to Seil, right to the end at Elleanabeich - such a beautiful village with fabulous food at the Oyster bar, travelling either through Oban or taking the narrow back road to Kilmore through the open glens around the town.
You can also get there by bus from Oban - Timetable
There is a council run small ferry that runs back and forth the 3 minutes crossing across the narrow strait between the mainland and island.
The Island is steeped in the heritage of its industrial slate industry, with deep quarries that were mined for slates that covered roofs across the nation, now making unusual wild swimming pools. Now left to nature the flowers and birds abound as you walk in the footsteps of so many before you in peace and tranquility, surrounded by the pounding Atlantic ocean. Stop and savour the tranquility of the modern era, alongside the evidence of a far busier, noisier, industrious era - pretty white cottages and wide shale beaches are the only remains.
If you want more adventure, Ellenabeich is the home harbour for the boats run by Seafari Adventures .. a long established company taking visitors out to Corryvreckan, for marine nature trips and longer excursions to Iona, Staffa and the puffin islands.
Around this area is so much nature, and so few people, that you are far more likely to come across the wildlife that abounds : you are immersed in the landscape, the island and the history : sea eagles, golden eagles, otters, dolphins, whales, porpoise and seals.
You do not need to go hungry after your leisurely wander around the island - the Puffer bar serves the most delicious fresh local produce. The Industrial heritage of this area is fascinating - and there are small volunteer run museums on both sides of the water to help you learn more of the people and history : Slate Islands Museum and Easdale Folk Museum.
Unique features do not end there - come in September and you can enjoy one of the most unusual competitive events - the World Stone Skimming Championships - taking advantage of the endless skimming stones and the deep water filled quarries - competition is fierce with entries from all around the world.
