Walkers Welcome : Oban has the best walking country
Walkers are very welcome here at Kintaline House .. very many of our guests are here for the amazing scenery, wonderful islands and awe inspiring natural history. You do not need to be a Munro Bagger to enjoy so much variety of walks and landscapes. Just from the house you can explore the local woodlands, the South Shian Nature Reserve, the gorgeous Tralee beach looking over Ardmucknish bay with the young copses behind filled with wild flowers and native species, past Barcalding Castle to the Dalintober path to the shores of Loch Creran The Caledonian way Sustrans route 78 passes close by, our minor road being the Benderloch Loop  Much of the path between Oban and Ballachulish is built along the former railway line which ran from Connel to the slate quarries near Ballachulish. The path has great views, hugging the coast for much of the way, and it is largely flat. You can join the path just a mile from the house, and go south into the village, the Ben Lora cafe, shop etc, as well as continue further to Loch Etive, and the Lochnell arms. Heading north you pass the Caledonian Oyster farm gate stall, the Racer Cafe, Appin Pottery and thence up into the old Barcaldine forestry lands, some of which is now felled extending the views, and other areas through the ancient oaks to Sutherlands Grove where you can branch off up to the reservoir. This is a forestry area with well marked paths and you can also get here by car, with an extensive car parking area, easy walks in the lower area, as well as the more ambitious climb up into GlenDhu. If you really want the best views take a hike up Beinn Lora which overlooks the village.. it is about a 4 mile walk, taking a few hours, clumbing to 370m .. at the top there are spectacular vistas over Loch Etive, Loch Linnhe, to Mull, Morvern and Glencoe. Well worth the effort. Another unique viewpoint is the one from which the photograph below is taken, and that is Lady Margarets Tower on the Lochnell estate on the other side of the bay. Instructions on how to get there are, with many others, in the guest comprehensive digital guidebook.
